Maple Mill in Cardwell Street, Oldham - over 100 years old and largest of the remaining cotton mills in the North of England - last operated in its traditional industry when owned by Courtaulds Spinning in the 1990s. It was a highly efficient manufacturer of open-end yarns, operating to the best international productivity standards. However, subsidised competition, in a climate of falling demand and world-wide over capacity, drove yarn prices down to a point where the mill was no longer viable, despite the owners reportedly spending £5 million modernising the production infrastructure at Maple Mill.
Today, at the centre of an area enjoying substantial Enterprise Zone Capital Development Programme improvements, Maple Mill is busy again, with hundreds employed in the production of home kitchens by Britain's fourth largest supplier.
